IN THIS LESSON

If we reverse engineer a Rapid Recall we will find it boils down to 3 core skills.

Disengagement - the ability come away from that which they find exciting or worrying. But without it, we have a dog diving into mud puddles, ignoring your recall to greet another dog or eat a random hot dog on the ground. Disengagement says “hey, that’s none of my business!”

Calmness - its easy to make a great choice from a clam state of mind. It’s the opposite of a knee-jerk reaction. Without Calmness, our dogs make impulsive choices such as scarfing down the random hot dog, darting across a road after a ball, or following their nose the the nearest dog who may not want to be greeted. From Calmness, our dog can more easily invoke the skills of Disengagement and Proximity.

Proximity - the desire to be close to you. Seeing value in coming close and knowing it’s a great deal, that they will be met with a good experience. Without Proximity, recall is more likely to fail because there is a greater distance between you and them. A distance full of ways for them to get sidetracked and engage with something else.
